About Me

About me… I must admit, I’ve played on this page for quite some time… I honestly don’t know if it is because I’m afraid of facing the blogging challenge or because I don’t know what to write… I find writing this page absolutely challenging. I don’t feel I’m an expert or experienced enough to deserve an “about” page. If I had to describe myself using one word, I’d say: “I’m a learner”… I’ve always loved learning and discovering new worlds.

When I was 5 years old, I fell in love with the English language. I had an ESL teacher, Daniela (I can’t remember her last name), she absolutely loved teaching, I can still remember her classes, how fun they were! I can still “see” her worksheets in every blank piece of paper in my hands. I just wanted to learn English, funny, because I’m from Argentina, my native language is Spanish. It was then, when I realized I had also fallen in love with teaching… I would spend hours pretending I was a teacher. I’d plan my classes as if I was going teach them. I’d spend all my allowance on English books, and not just reading books… books for ESL students, and believe it or not, I’d also buy books for teachers… and yes, I was only a kid.

When I was 9 years old, I had the chance to go to Disney World for the first time. Imagine how excited I was… savoring the unforgettable opportunity of spending time in a country where everyone spoke English… One day walking around the Magic Kingdom, I came across a caricature artist. He made a living out of drawing caricatures of children just by asking them a question: “What do you want to be when you grow up?”… There I was, surrounded by magical English sounds, amazed by the dream-like world of Disney… it was the perfect picture. It was at that exact moment when I said the magic words: “I want to be an English teacher”

"I want to be an English teacher", I said

It took me some time to embrace my journey into teaching. I’ve had my doubts and fears, but as the proverb says: “All roads lead to Rome”, Oh yes they do… Here I am, feeling absolutely blessed, teaching English as a second language at an elementary school. I’ve always dreamed of being a teacher. Just being able to say these magic words is blissfully exciting, “I’m a teacher”… My lifetime dream has come true.

Disclaimer
This is a space where I plan on reflecting and sharing my experiences. I have no sponsor, and by no means my posts, reflections or anything on this blog represent my employer’s opinion, this is my blog. Not only am I starting “About a Teacher” for sharing my adventures with the world, but also for my own personal and professional growth. I do hope you join me on board. Your contribution is essential, as I said before, I’m a learner… I can’t learn from my own reflections. It’s your contribution that will lead this into a meaningful adventure. It’s important for me to hear your voice. This experience will be powerfully enriching if we get to learn with and from each other.

    Greta,

Wow! What an amazing and inspiring journey. You are a caring, passionate, and all-in teacher. If I had child, I would want you to be his or her teacher. On top of that, to see that picture tugs at the heart.

Congratulations on your blog. I am so looking forward to reading more about your adventures.

    Hi Gret,

I saw your response to a students blog about a video that he and his classmates created at South High School in Grosse Pointe, MI…when I read that you were an ESL teacher in Buenos Aires, I just had to contact you! I am an elementary school Spanish teacher for Grosse Pointe Public Schools, but I was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I moved to the U.S. when I was five, but most of my family lives in Argentina (my dad recently retired and is now living in Argentina again). I really appreciate your passion for teaching and technology!

    • November 24, 2010 10:15 pm

Wow Ana! Thanks so much! Have you been in Argentina recently? Where in Buenos Aires, were you born? Please let me know if I can be of any help! If you ever need someone to Skype in, or any project…I’d be glad to help! I seriously appreciate your words and comment! Thanks again!

Greta, comparto tu entusiamo por enseñar y por intentar nuevos enfoques y tecnologías. Te felicito !!
Es posible que fueras mi alumna en San Marcos?
    Estela

    • December 7, 2010 10:06 am

Hola Estela! No puedo creerlo!
Gracias enserio! Tenes cuenta en twitter? Me encantaria seguir en contacto!

    Hi Gret,
I apologize for leaving this in your comments section but I can’t find an email address. I want to tell you about my web series Ruby Skye P.I. (http://rubyskyepi.com) which is aimed at kids and available to watch online for free.

It’s an award winning comedy mystery that kids, parents and teachers love. Several teachers are using it very successfully in their ESL programs. Our website has lots of additional content to support our themes. And if kids comment on the site or on our Facebook page, we respond, which encourages reading and writing.

It would be wonderful if you take a look, share it with your students and maybe even your readers.

    Hi Gret,

I just happened to stumble upon your blog before leaving for class…I’ve wanted to be an English teacher ever since I could remember! I’m currently in my last semester of school before the credential program, and even though I just read your one blog on having your students blog, I am looking forward to following you and reading your thoughts about teaching. I’m not planning on being an ESL teacher, but two of my classes this semester focus on multicultural teaching. I feel like I was meant to find your blog and be even more inspired! đŸ™‚

I found your page on freshly pressed as I was trying to get a sense of what to publish on my About page. I share your struggle to write this page as well. What really struck me is your statement, “Your contribution is essential, as I said before, I’m a learner… I can’t learn from my own reflections. It’s your contribution that will lead this into a meaningful adventure. It’s important for me to hear your voice.” I cannot even count how many times I have said this same thing-well not word for word but you know what I mean. I guess that is what has drawm me to the blogging world. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you! I love to hear what people have to say about my reflections, stories, etc… I get to learn so much, it totally deepens my reflection. That’s what makes blogging so powerful! đŸ™‚

    Ms. Greta,

I am fascinated with your accomplishments! My name is Amy Archer. I am a student at The University of South Alabama in Mobile, AL. In my EDM 310 class, we are currently learning how to comment on the blogs of children. I have been assigned to comment on one of your student’s blog post. Before I begin I wanted to get to know about your class a little bit better. I checked out your Twitter account, and on your account I found the link to your blog. After reading your about me, I just had to comment!
I wanted to tell you that we are very similar. The only difference is that I know English as my first language, and I have a second major in Spanish. You are doing a wonderful job by having your students blog and practice their English! I want to encourage you to keep up the good, hard, and devoted work!
